Although some people can be pretty ambivalent about the outdoors, if you do love it and you have the gear then get out there no matter what the weather.
So far this October has been beautiful and my friend and I are having a great week in Cornwall where we’ve hired a lovely cottage. Every morning we promised that we’d get up at a fairly sensible time and walk down to the beach. That way we know we will have done something good, even if we do sneak back to bed with our cup of tea afterwards!
In actual fact though we’ve been all over the place during the day. Yesterday we saw a seal colony at a place called Godrevy, and then had lunch in the sweet little beach café. The day before we lived it up in St Ives and had a meal overlooking the beach at The Tate and we just loved every minute of it, then we had a lovely stroll along the beach and through the little streets.
Of course we’ve been lucky and managed to get a week away from work, but no matter where you are there’s no excuse for not getting out and about, even if it’s just for a bike ride.
If you’re in London then catch the train down to Brighton for a sunny Sunday. Or better still take a room for the night, and make a weekend of it. There are some amazing little places to stay and many are pretty open-minded. That way you can get the natural beauty during the day and the night life later on, all in the same trip.
Further north the train comes in handy too. From Leeds or Manchester get the train out to Settle in the moors and you’re perfectly based to walk up some hills – even do the Yorkshire three Peaks if you’re really energetic. There’s great accommodation there too as well as enough outdoor shops to satisfy any equipment cravings.
If you’re off out for the whole day do remember to think about food as well. Are there any great pubs or cafes on the way? If not you’ll need to take your own, and maybe a flask of something hot to drink. Spirits can drop suddenly if your energy levels aren’t kept up and you certainly don’t want that if you’re out with someone new!
Autumn is a lovely time to be out of doors, don’t let any potential bad weather put you off if you have the right equipment, but it’s best to have a back up plan too. Even the most dedicated outdoor lovers get a bit damp spirited after a whole day in the rain!
But what’s this talk of rain? It’s gorgeous out there. Let’s go fill our lungs.
